Can your youth articulate their faith and Christian worldview? Give them the opportunity to express themselves - and complete for a college scholarship - at the annual Youth Speakers Tournaments! Held in conjunction with the youth Bible Drill every spring, the tournaments are a great way to help your youth build their public speaking skills.

Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to give older youth an opportunity to express verbally their thoughts, opinions, and convictions in the areas of church, denomination, missions, home, and other areas relating to Christian growth and maturity. Through this activity youth will develop skills in communicating to an audience.

Participants
Any youth from a participating Kentucky Baptist Convention church who is fifteen, sixteen, or seventeen years of age or who is in the tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade is eligible. A winner or runner-up can only represent Kentucky once at the National Invitational Youth Speakers Tournament.

Tournaments
Church Tournament: Plans and preparation for youth participation in the Speakers Tournament are to be made jointly by the Discipleship Training Director and the youth leadership. Each association determines how many participants the church can send to the associational tournament.

Associational Tournament: The associational event is to be held by March 16, 2008. It is to be held at the time and place designated by the Associational Discipleship Training Director and/or council. The Associational Discipleship Training youth consultant or someone appointed by him is responsible for conducting the tournament. Each association can send three participants to the state tournament.

The Associational Discipleship Training Director or someone appointed by him is responsible for sending the names, addresses, phone numbers, and churches of those eligible to advance to the State Speakers Tournament to the Youth Ministry Department, P. O. Box 43433, Louisville, KY 40253-0433, by March 19, 2008.

State Tournament: The Kentucky’s state Youth Speakers Tournament will be at the Northside Baptist Church in Elizabethtown on April 5, 2008. There, preliminary tournaments may be used to select participants for the final Tournament to be held later on Saturday. The Kentucky representatives and alternates will be selected at that time.

Each participant will be responsible for his or her own expenses to the State Speakers Tournament.

We will participate again this year in the National Invitational Youth Speakers Tournament. This event is sponsored by the Southeastern States Discipleship Training Leaders and will be held Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Georgia Baptist Center in Duluth, Georgia.

The Kentucky Baptist Convention will contribute up to $500 towards the cost of the events in Duluth for the Speakers Tournament winner.

The Youth Ministry Department of the Kentucky Baptist Convention will contribute up to $500 towards the cost of the trip to Duluth, GA for our Bible Drill and Speakers Tournament winners.

College Scholarships
Campbellsville University, The University of the Cumberlands, and Georgetown College will give scholarships worth up to $3,600.00 total to the state representatives and alternates. These scholarships will be applied toward tuition upon enrollment. As long as they continue at the college and meet the required grade point average, the scholarships will be renewed each semester for a total of four years.

Guidelines for Participants
1. Each speaker must compose his own speech. It is permissible to quote from materials gathered from any source, but proper credit must be given for all quoted material. In speaking, the speaker should indicate that the material used is being quoted, but he is not required to give the complete source of the quotation.

2. Each speaker will have four to six minutes. It is suggested that the speeches be planned for 5 1/2 minutes in order to stay within the time limit.

3. Speakers will be judged on the basis of 100 points. Content/composition will count 50 percent and delivery will count 50 percent. Click here to download a sample of the scoresheet. (You’ll also need Adobe Acrobat Reader to download this file, which you can get for free.)

4. A speaker is disqualified only for such major reasons as not being of the eligible age or for using a speech that is not his/her own.

5. Using notes is permissible but will be taken into consideration by the judges. The less a participant relies on notes the better he/she will score.

Preparing the Speech
You may choose from one of the following topics:
  • Guarding Your Mind
  • Distinctly Different
  • Who Does It Really Belong To?
  • Why Do They Call Him Savior?
  • Costly Commitment
  • The Mind of Christ
  • What is True Love?
  • God Is in Control
  • Why Live Like a Christian?
  • Just Trust
  • The Bible: God’s Gift to Us
  • School: My Mission Field
  • Pray…It is Just That Simple
  • Youth are the Church Too
  • Streams in the Desert
  • Home Life
  • My Space or His Space
  • Why I Believe What I Believe

Some tips for preparation:
Choose your subject prayerfully, and in plenty of time to be well prepared.

Think and read extensively before you begin the construction of your speech. (Caution: First, think about the subject before you start reading or you will be overcome with too many ideas - at least more than you can use.)

Ask yourself questions about the subject. These questions could well form the outline of your speech.

Consult your church, school and public libraries for resource material. Take notes on what you read.

Observe and talk with others.

Consider the audience. Are they interested in the subject? What do they know about the subject? What is their attitude toward the subject? What do you want them to know?

Determine your aim or objective. Do you want to interest, inform, stimulate, convince, or persuade?

State your main purpose. In one sentence, give the gist of what you plan to tell the people.

Outline your speech. Consider the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.

Select your words carefully. Use words that express exactly what you mean. Include quotations, questions, illustrations, comparisons and contrasts.

Practice your speech. Practice it before a mirror after you have your content well in mind.
